The deposits of mortmoriUonite clay found in Britain have calcium as the exchangeable ion. These deposits have been excavated and used commercially for a considerable number of years. The Romans used the clay for ‘fulling’ which was a method for degreasing wool or woollen cloth by treating it with a clay-water slurry.
