Colloidal silica can be a valuable tool for use in ground consolidation by utilizing the gelling functionality to create a sealing grout. When mixed with an activator under controlled conditions, the gel-time can be predetermined for accurate, targeted application.
By using adjusting silica grades and concentrations, the grouting contractor can reach the geological structure targets for consolidation that were previously unreachable while maintaining the balance between durability and environmental limitations. Use of colloidal silica in this application is popular for underground projects due to high consolidation and water sealing demands in environmentally sensitive areas. Three to ten fold increases in liquefaction resistance has been measured in lab trials. Since liquids is incompressible, high pressure during injection is also possible but not always needed
